2,6-dimethoxy anthraquinone as redox mediator for the reversible deposition-dissolution of Li2S in lithium-sulfur batteries
- Key Words:
- Abstract:The deposition and dissolution of Li2S are critical processes for the operation of high energy density lithiumsulfur (Li -S) batteries. In this study, 2,6-dimethoxy anthraquinone (DMAQ) is immobilized on the surface of carbon material (XC-72), to control the three-dimensional deposition of Li2S and reduce the energy barrier for the dissolution of Li2S. According to the density functional theory, DMAQ-Li2Sx has a higher HOMO and a lower LUMO energy, resulting in the promotion of the Li2Sx redox process. Furthermore, DMAQ-Li2Sx can reversibly dissociate and recombine under the influence of relatively moderate interaction forces, causing higher lithium polysulfide conversion. The obtained S@DMAQ/C cathode exhibits notable electrocatalytic performance in Li -S cells and good cycling stability at 1 C over 600 cycles, with the capacity retention rate as high as 77.3 % and a capacity decay rate of only 0.038 % per cycle.
