- Abstract:A biosensing platform using Ag@SiO2-DNA-fluorophore nanostructure was designed for metal ions and small organic molecules detection. DNA hybridization occurred in the presence of the targets through the formation of base-target-base complex; accordingly, the fluorophore (Cy3) was brought to the surface of Ag@SiO2 core/shell nanostructures. Through controlling the thickness of the silica shell on the Ag nanoparticle, the fluorescence of Cy3 could be enhanced by the surface plasmon resonance of Ag nanoparticle for up to 2.5 folds. This metal-enhanced fluorescence (MEF) sensor provided high sensitivity and selectivity for the detection of Hg2+, Ag+, and coralyne. It may be developed as a new class of MEF biosensors for other metal ions and organic molecules analysis. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
