Preparation of high-strength nanocomposite films by combining MXene with nanofibers from green and easily available kelp for electromagnetic interference shielding application

Abstract:The development of lightweight, high-strength nanofiber-based composite films for efficient electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding has received extensive attention and research. However, the currently reported fiber-based nanocomposites are confronted with some issues such as raw materials are not readily available, expensive, and not environmentally friendly, which is hard to meet the actual commercial needs. Based on this, we propose to extract kelp nanofibers from green and easily available natural kelp by acid treatment-enzymatic hydrolysis technique, followed by mixing with solvent-etched MXene nanosheets to prepare KCNF/MXene nanocomposite films by vacuum filtration technique. The films at a MXene content of 60 wt% exhibit excellent mechanical properties (tensile strength: 118.22 /- 5.69 MPa, Young's modulus: 5.07 /- 0.63 GPa, and toughness of 2.23 /- 0.27 MJ m-3), which is attributed to the ingeniously designed configuration and interactions. The continuous conductive pathways constructed by MXene allow for a high electrical conductivity of 2837.39 S cm-1, which endows the films with a high electromagnetic shielding performance with the SSE/t value of 20833.1 dB cm2 g-1, as well as excellent electro-thermal conversion properties, with a stable surface temperature 52.4 degrees C for 2000 s. This method of obtaining raw materials from nature provides a viable avenue for the development of lightweight, high-strength composites.
