Abstract:In this work, hydrophobic polyaniline-silica nanocomposites were prepared by the growth of the silica spheres in polyaniline solution. Silica spheres were encapsulated into the polyaniline shell (SiO<inf>2</inf>@PANI), and then mixed with silicone for protecting Q235 carbon steel in 0.1 M sulfuric acid solution. The coatings with special morphology present hydrophobicity (CA=115°), outstanding anti-permeability, good mechanical properties, and strong adhesion. Specifically, silicone-SiO<inf>2</inf>@PANI coating with a SiO<inf>2</inf>/PANI weight ratio of 4:1 shows a high corrosion resistance of 2.24×107 Ω cm2 even after 180 days of immersion in corrosive medium. The long-lasting corrosion protection of the coating may be attributed to the excellent physical barrier property and the formation of a thick passive film.<br/> © 2019 Elsevier B.V.
