- Abstract:The chalcone is widely known and explored due to its presence in many natural compounds. However, the investigation into the photophysical properties of chalcone is still limited, especially for the cyclic chalcone molecules. Herein, we constructed a cyclic chalcone based organic dye CCP ((Z)-2-(4-(dimethylamino)benzylidene)-2,3-dihydro-1H-inden-1-one) with an electron donating dimethylamino group and an electronwithdrawing carbonyl group. CCP shows high sensitivity to solvent polarity, and the maximum emission wavelength of CCP redshifted obviously with increasing polarity. In different solvents, the maximum emission wavelengths of CCP show a good linear relationship with the solvent polarity parameter ENT . The polarity parameter ENT of the solvent can be calculated by the maximum emission wavelength of CCP in the corresponding solvent. In the mixed solvent, the maximum emission wavelength of CCP can be well corresponding to the ratio of mixed solvents. That is, the polarity of the solvent can be estimated by the maximum emission wavelength of CCP, and the ratio of the mixed solvent and water faction of various solvents can also be detected through the corresponding linear relationship. This dye provides a multifunctional polarity probe, and has enriched the application of chalcone compounds.
