Mechanical and electrical properties of PP composite modified by SEBS used for high voltage cable

摘要:Polypropylene (PP) has become an excellent cable main insulation material to replace cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE), based on its excellent electrical insulation, high temperature resistance and recyclability. At present, the relationship between the composition, formulation and properties of PP cable insulation materials is being studied. In this paper, the mechanical and electrical properties of styrene ethylene butylene styrene (SEBS) modified PP composite is characterized by combining experiment and simulation methods. The mechanical experimental results show that the toughness of the composite is significantly improved by introducing SEBS. Among them, the energy storage modulus (E') of the modified composite is improved at the experimental temperature range (-80 similar to 60 degrees C). In addition, the essential fracture work increased from the unmodified 47.78 kJ/m(2) to the modified 180.63 kJ/m(2), an increase of 278 %. Electrical performance experiments show that the introduction of SEBS leads to the decrease of insulation performance. Under an electric field of -50 kV/mm, the absolute value of the conduction current of SEBS/PP is 3.58 x 10(-9) A, which is 7.8 times higher than that of pure PP. The dielectric constant of the composite is 2.38, which is 8.68 % higher than that of pure PP. The simulation results show that the band gap of SEBS molecular chain is 4.145 eV, which is 26.09 % lower than that of pure PP. As a result, its electrons transition more easily than that of pure PP, which reduces the insulation properties of the composite. This work provides important research ideas for the insulation design of new environment-friendly cables.
