Abstract:Optical limiting materials have attracted much attention for its potential application in laser protection field and gold nanorods (GNRs) have optical limiting property due to the optical nonlinearities. In this article, GNRs were prepared using seed-mediated growth method and surface-modified with thio-terminated polyethyleneglycol (PEG-SH) to give PEGylated gold nanorods. Then the PEG-SH on the surface of GNRs was partially substituted with 1-dodecanthiol. Self-assembly was realized through hydrophobic force of 1-dodecanthiol on the nanorods surface and side-by-side alignment was observed in transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images. Optical limiting property study of gold nanorods in different dispersion state showed the ordered array of GNRs exhibited better optical limiting property than those well dispersed GNRs.
