Abstract:2D monoelemental materials beyond graphene, such as germanene, have recently garnered extensive attention due to their tunable optical and electronic properties. While the performance of germanene-based materials, for example, germanane, for energy storage and catalysis applications has been previously examined, to the best of our knowledge their use for electrochemical biosensing has yet to be widely explored. To this aim, a disposable genosensor, with three different types of nanosized germananes, namely, germanane, methylgermanane, and cyanopropylgermanane, is proposed here for the sensitive and selective detection of Alzheimer-related single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Among the three materials, germanane enabled excellent bioanalytical performance and showcased rapid electron transfer rates for the detection of SNP, providing a linear range between 1 x 10(-12) and 1 x 10(-8) M and with a detection limit of 34 pM under optimized conditions. Moreover, the potential of the developed device for miniaturization and decentralized analysis is demonstrated with the use of a disposable electrode printed chip (DEP-chip). This study not only demonstrated the potential use of germanene-based nanomaterials as a biosensing platform but also provided a platform to tailor their chemical features to achieve the optimal biosensing performance.
